There are literally scores of courses available on ESG, but they are not all meant for the same individual. The following guide will help you understand the different categories of courses available and will guide you on how to choose the right course for yourself.

Pick a course by career goal, not by brand alone
For India, BRSR coverage is non-negotiable
Look for hands-on reporting, not just theory
A recognised certificate makes your CV stand out
Search for an “ESG course today”. You will see a wall of options. There are videos, weekend workshops, global exams and university certificates. Some ESG courses cost nothing while others cost more than a used scooter.
Many people who message us ask the question: which ESG course is actually worth it?
The honest answer is that there is no best ESG course for everyone. A CA preparing BRSR for a listed client needs something different, from a fund analyst screening stock or from a fresher who wants to break into sustainability consulting.
Instead of a random top-ten list this guide shows you how the main types of ESG certification compare, what separates a good ESG course from a weak one, and how to match an ESG course to the job you want. If you're new to the subject, start with our explainer on what ESG is and how ESG reporting works in India, then come back here. And if you already know you want a reporting-focused program, you can jump straight to the Professional Certificate Program in ESG & Sustainability Reporting.
Five years ago, ESG was a task that a few large companies performed as part of their annual reports. That situation has changed quickly.
That last point is the real opportunity. Employers aren't short of people who can define ESG. They're short of people who can do it. A good certification closes that gap and gives hiring managers something concrete to look at on your CV. We wrote more about this shift in why MBA students are choosing ESG careers.
In any comparison, it helps to be clear about what you are comparing first. As we understand, four aspects count above all others:
BRSR for India and GRI, ISSB, TCFD, SASB and ESRS for international projects.
Case studies and actual reporting practice, not just presentations.
A certificate issued by a reputable educational organization.
Live classes that fit into your schedule and instructors that you can consult.
It is extremely uncommon for a course to excel in all four. Most of them have strengths in one or two areas. Thus, it is important to know your priorities.
Almost every ESG course you'll find falls into one of four buckets:
| Course Type | Best For | Depth | Typical Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certificates from universities / IITs | Professionals and Graduates developing comprehensive skills in ESG reporting | Several models + practical exercises | Online, 3-6 months, Weekend Classes |
| Courses from professional bodies | A certain body's members (e.g., CAs) | Narrow, usually about BRSR compliance | Quick Batches, Members Only |
| Worldwide certification through examinations | Investment and finance professionals | Good at investments, bad at report production | Independent Study plus Exam |
| Short online courses & MOOCs | New entrants experimenting with water | Beginner's | Video Recording, Self-Paced |
None of them is “wrong”. A free MOOC sounds like a logical choice. However, if you plan to work within the ESG sphere, then you will most likely require something more substantial than just watching videos.
Here are the certifications that Indian professionals tend to consider the most, along with who each certification suits. Since things like the fee structure and batch schedule keep changing, it’s always best to refer directly to the certification’s website before applying.
This certification program by eAsia Academy is conducted in collaboration with IIT Roorkee’s Continuing Education Centre and encompasses GRI, SASB, TCFD, ISSB, ESRS, UN SDGs, and SEBI BRSR, focusing particularly on GRI reporting. This program is more practical in nature and deals with how to collect, map and report data.
Suits: working professionals, CAs, MBAs, engineers and graduates who want to prepare or review ESG reports. Format: 4 months, live weekend classes. Fee: ₹85,000 + GST. See the full ESG program details.
ICAI's Sustainability Reporting Standards Board offers this programme, which is directed at chartered accountants and revolves around the topic of BRSR. It would be good for you if you're an ICAI member and only require the BRSR information.
Suits: ICAI members. Note: it's limited to the members and revolves around BRSR only.
Formerly called the Certificate in ESG Investing, this is a globally known, exam-based credential. It's built around how ESG factors feed into investment analysis and portfolio decisions.
Suits: equity analysts, fund managers and anyone in asset management. Keep in mind: it's investment-focused and self-study, so it isn't designed to teach you how to prepare a BRSR or GRI report.
GRI itself provides training for the use of the GRI Standards, which are the most commonly used sustainability reporting standards in the world.
Suits: people who specifically want deep GRI knowledge. Keep in mind: it covers GRI rather than India's BRSR requirements, so Indian reporting professionals usually pair it with BRSR training.
Platforms like NPTEL, Coursera and others host introductory ESG and sustainability courses, often recorded and self-paced.
Suits: students and beginners who want a feel for the subject. Keep in mind: they rarely include live mentoring, India-specific reporting practice or a certificate that carries weight with employers.
If carbon and emissions work interests you as much as reporting, also look at the Carbon Credits, Carbon Markets & Net-Zero Pathways program, or read our guide to the best carbon credit course in India.

No sustainability degree is necessary to reach this point. Individuals enter such positions from the fields of commerce, finance, engineering, law, human resources, and management annually. It all comes down to demonstrating concrete competencies backed by frameworks.
That would depend on your intention. Are you interested in learning how to report ESG and sustainability? You might like courses with SEBI BRSR, GRI, and ISSB training with actual reporting experience and a recognized certificate. The Professional Certificate Program in ESG & Sustainability Reporting from eAsia Academy in collaboration with the Continuing Education Centre of IIT Roorkee will fit this purpose. Fees range from free courses like MOOCs to courses that cost even above a lakh. The eAsia Academy Professional Certificate Program in ESG & Sustainability Reporting with IIT Roorkee costs ₹85,000 + GST.

In the case of India, SEBI BRSR and BRSR Core have to be included. In addition, GRI, IFRS S1 & S2 (the ISSB standards), TCFD, SASB, ESRS, and UN SDGs need to be included.
